BYD Launches Japan-Customized K-Car \"Otter\" to Deepen Local Market Penetration
During the Tokyo Motor Show in November 2025, BYD officially launched the BYD RACCO, a pure electric kei car (K-EV) custom-developed for the Japanese market, with its Chinese name "Haitao" (Otter). This marks the first time a Chinese automaker has developed an exclusive product from scratch tailored to Japan's unique K-Car specifications. Strictly adhering to Japan's kei car standards, the model measures 3,400 × 1,480 × 2,000 mm and features a four-seat layout with a wheelbase of 2,490 mm, achieving optimized interior space utilization within its compact body. The dual sliding side doors are specifically designed to align with Japanese users' usage habits.

In terms of performance, the "Otter" is equipped with a custom-tuned heat pump air conditioning system, significantly enhancing driving range performance in winter. Its total lifecycle cost is 40%-50% lower than that of equivalent fuel-powered K-Cars. Launched simultaneously is the plug-in hybrid model Sea Lion 06 DM-i, which achieves a fuel consumption of 3.2L/100km under conditions thanks to BYD's 4th-generation DM technology. A BYD official stated that the two models kick off the brand's dual-line layout of "pure electric + hybrid" in Japan, with the "Otter" expected to officially go on sale in early 2026, further breaking into the traditional advantageous market of Japanese automakers.
