Geely EX5 Joins Ranks of Chinese EVs with 5-Star Safety Rating
Volvo’s parent company Geely has scored another win for Chinese electric vehicles: its EX5 electric crossover just aced both the European NCAP and Australian ANCAP crash tests, securing a coveted five-star safety rating.
It’s a familiar refrain in some Western circles—doubts about Chinese product quality—yet the facts tell a different story. The Geely EX5 joins an impressive lineup of Chinese EVs with five-star NCAP credentials, including BYD’s Dolphin, Seal, and Song, NIO’s ET5, XPeng’s P7 and G9, and Zeekr X. Even Western brands like Polestar and Volvo, whose cars are built in China, have earned the same top mark.

The crash test footage speaks for itself: in a front offset collision (a key safety assessment), the EX5’s A-pillar showed no visible deformation, and the front tire didn’t intrude into the cabin—proving it’s a safe space for occupants even in a 50 km/h barrier impact, regardless of the “Made in China” label.
Beyond safety, the five-passenger crossover holds its own in performance and comfort. Powered by a 60.2 kWh battery, it delivers 430 km of range on the WLTP cycle and can charge to 80% in just 20 minutes. It hits 0-100 km/h in a zippy 6.9 seconds, with exterior fit-and-finish and interior appointments that match near-luxe rivals like Acura, Buick, or core Volvo models.

The EX5 was already a solid EV—but that five-star safety rating might be the final push Western buyers need to give it a chance. And once they do, this Chinese crossover is likely to win them over.
